Instantons and the Spin of the Nucleon

Motivated by measurements of the flavor singlet axial coupling constant of the nucleon in polarized deep inelastic scattering we study the contribution of instantons to OZI violation in the axial-vector channel. We consider, in particular, the f_1-a_1 meson splitting, the flavor singlet and triplet axial coupling of a constituent quark, and the axial coupling constant of the nucleon. We show that instantons provide a short distance contribution to OZI violating correlation functions which is repulsive in the f_1 meson channel and adds to the flavor singlet three-point function of a constituent quark. We also show that the sign of this contribution is determined by positivity arguments. We compute long distance contributions using numerical simulations of the instanton liquid. We find that the iso-vector axial coupling constant of a constituent quark is (g_A^3)_Q=0.9 and that of a nucleon is g_A^3=1.28, in good agreement with experiment. The flavor singlet coupling of a quark is close to one, while that of a nucleon is suppressed, g_A^0=0.77. However, this number is larger than the experimental value g_A^0=(0.28-0.41).Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures, revised version (references added

Irradiation of MOS-FET devices to provide desired logic functions

    Get PDF
Gamma, X-ray, electron, or other radiation is used to shift threshold potentials of MOS devices on logic circuits. Before irradiation MOS gates to be shifted are biased positive and other gates are grounded to substrate. Threshold lasts 10 years. Thermal annealing brings circuit back to original configuration

Hadronic Wave Functions in the Instanton Model

We study hadronic wave functions using an instanton model for the QCD vacuum. The wave functions are defined in terms of gauge invariant Bethe Salpeter amplitudes which we have determined numerically using a Monte Carlo simulation of the instanton ensemble. We find that the pion and the proton, as well as the rho meson and the delta have very similar wave functions but observe a sizeable splitting between mesons or baryons with different spin. We compare our results with data obtained in lattice gauge simulations.Comment: 20 pages, uuencoded postscript file appended, SUNY-NTG-94-

Decorin as a multivalent therapeutic agent against cancer.

    Get PDF
Decorin is a prototypical small leucine-rich proteoglycan that epitomizes the multifunctional nature of this critical gene family. Soluble decorin engages multiple receptor tyrosine kinases within the target-rich environment of the tumor stroma and tumor parenchyma. Upon receptor binding, decorin initiates signaling pathways within endothelial cells downstream of VEGFR2 that ultimately culminate in a Peg3/Beclin 1/LC3-dependent autophagic program. Concomitant with autophagic induction, decorin blunts capillary morphogenesis and endothelial cell migration, thereby significantly compromising tumor angiogenesis. In parallel within the tumor proper, decorin binds multiple RTKs with high affinity, including Met, for a multitude of oncosuppressive functions including growth inhibition, tumor cell mitophagy, and angiostasis. Decorin is also pro-inflammatory by modulating macrophage function and cytokine secretion. Decorin suppresses tumorigenic growth, angiogenesis, and prevents metastatic lesions in a variety of in vitro and in vivo tumor models. Therefore, decorin would be an ideal therapeutic candidate for combating solid malignancies

Cycles of Quadratic Polynomials and Rational Points on a Genus-Two Curve

It has been conjectured that for NN sufficiently large, there are no quadratic polynomials in Q[z]\bold Q[z] with rational periodic points of period NN. Morton proved there were none with N=4N=4, by showing that the genus~22 algebraic curve that classifies periodic points of period~4 is birational to X1(16)X_1(16), whose rational points had been previously computed. We prove there are none with N=5N=5. Here the relevant curve has genus~1414, but it has a genus~22 quotient, whose rational points we compute by performing a~22-descent on its Jacobian and applying a refinement of the method of Chabauty and Coleman. We hope that our computation will serve as a model for others who need to compute rational points on hyperelliptic curves. We also describe the three possible GalQ_{\bold Q}-stable 55-cycles, and show that there exist GalQ_{\bold Q}-stable NN-cycles for infinitely many NN. Furthermore, we answer a question of Morton by showing that the genus~1414 curve and its quotient are not modular. Finally, we mention some partial results for N=6N=6

Vacuum fluctuations and the thermodynamics of chiral models

We consider the thermodynamics of chiral models in the mean-field approximation and discuss the relevance of the (frequently omitted) fermion vacuum loop. Within the chiral quark-meson model and its Polyakov loop extended version, we show that the fermion vacuum fluctuations can change the order of the phase transition in the chiral limit and strongly influence physical observables. We compute the temperature-dependent effective potential and baryon number susceptibilities in these models, with and without the vacuum term, and explore the cutoff and the pion mass dependence of the susceptibilities. Finally, in the renormalized model the divergent vacuum contribution is removed using the dimensional regularization.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Some aspects of upwelling in the Gulf of Panama

    Get PDF
ENGLISH: Strong coastal upwelling occurs in the Gulf of Panama regularly each year during the season, from about January through April, when strong northerly winds are blowing offshore. Because of the evident importance of upwelling to the ecology of the Gulf of Panama, we commenced in the fall of 1954 a study of various physical, chemical, and biological phenomena associated therewith. Observations were taken at bi-weekly intervals at a fixed location in the Gulf (approximately 10 miles SE of Taboga Island) to supplement the serial observations of sea level, sea temperature, and winds that have been gathered for many years by the Panama Canal Company.
